Options Resource Clinic is not an adoption agency. We do not facilitate the adoption process. We facilitate referrals and connections to licensed agencies that can help you.
An open adoption is a form of adoption that allows the birth mother and adoptive parents to have access to each other’s information, as well as opens the lines of contact through face-to-face meetings, phone calls, emails and more. Additionally, it allows you to have contact with your child throughout his or her life if you choose. This could mean personal visits, receiving photos or emails, or regular phone calls with the adoptive parents or the child. With open adoption, you have the option to play a role in your child’s life.
A semi-open adoption is a hybrid between the two better-known options. In this option, the birth mother and adoptive family will experience limited interaction, typically mitigated by a third party such as the agency or an attorney. Any communication with the child is done through non-identifying emails or letters. In some cases, regulated and supervised visits between the birth mother and child are allowed.
A closed adoption is where the information of both the birth mother and adoptive parents are kept private. This includes names, family history, photos, and any other identifying information. For this option, there is no contact between the two parties, as well as between the birth mother and child once the process is final. With a closed adoption, many birth mothers are able to find closure and are secure in knowing they have privacy.
Options Resource Clinic only works with adoption agencies that require families to be okay with the birth parent changing the terms of the adoption.
What does that mean?
If you decide to have a completely closed adoption in the beginning, but change your mind a few years later and want to be involved (whatever that may look like), you can.
Each birth parent can choose their own adoption plan. They do not have to be the same. One parent can choose to be completely involved and the other can choose to not be involved at all.
